Groton Center Fire Station

Gale provided structural engineering services for the design of a new two-story, 9,930 square foot fire station to augment the existing fire station. The new Center Fire Station will provide training and dormitory space to accommodate full-time firefighters for the anticipated population growth of the town. The building is a steel-framed structure with concrete masonry unit walls at the stairs, elevator shaft and perimeter walls. The design of the building structure was closely coordinated with the architectural, mechanical, electrical and plumbing plans. Gale developed options for various framing schemes and participated in the value engineering process.

The features of the new fire station include: four double-depth, pull-through apparatus bays; a decontamination facility; a training classroom; sleeping quarters and kitchen; firefighters training mezzanine; two-story training stair and training roof area; and radiant floor heat. Gale utilized B.I.M. (REVIT computer modeling) for the design and Risa 3D for structural analysis.
