New London Superior Courthouse

The Project

Constructed in 1891, the New London Courthouse was previously the Williams Memorial Institute, housing educational facilities until 1972. This facility is listed on the U.S. National Register of Historic Places as a significant example of Richardson Romanesque architecture. The building had poorly operating pivot windows, mortar/sealant at granite veneer joints, and aged slate shingles. Gale performed evaluation, design, bid, and construction phase services for the roof replacement and other improvements.

Gale’s Services

  • Evaluated existing conditions using a lift, and performed test cuts of the historic slate roof
  • Prepared design document submissions for roof and associated components repairs; coordinated document submissions with Factory Mutual Global (FMG) and State Historic Preservation Offices (SHPO)
  • Designed restoration details including replacement of sealants and mortar with strategic placement of each with appropriate weep hole provisions; windows received cleaning, lubricating, gasket replacement, internal joinery and perimeter sealant replacements
  • Provided bid phase services
  • Pending contractor award, Gale will be providing construction phase services including contract administration and quality control reviews
