Bates College Chapel

Exterior Envelope Renovation
Lewiston, Maine

Built in the early 1900s, the Bates College Chapel was experiencing water infiltration associated with masonry and potential roof defects. Areas of masonry were potential fall hazards, and a portion of the cast stone was experiencing severe deterioration (associated with alkali silica reaction). After reviewing the building’s history and a previous envelope study, Gale performed a detailed visual evaluation, interior leak audit, and material and ambient moisture content surveys. Gale provided Bates with an in-depth evaluation study, including detailed results of the cast stone petrographic analysis and mortar analysis. Our recommendations for renovations included preliminary budgetary estimates.
