Fitchburg Municipal Airport: Obstruction Removal
Gale provided airport planning and engineering services to the Fitchburg Municipal Airport for the removal of obstructing vegetation in the Runway 14 Approach. We designed, permitted, bid, and provided construction phase services.
Challenges
- Substantial removal of obstructing vegetation in wetlands (Nashua River, Baker Brook, & an Unnamed Brook)
- Erodible soils and undulating topography
- Majority of clearing on commercial properties
Gale’s Solution
Coordinate vegetation removal with each property owner and city officials- Install effective erosion control measures throughout the 17-acre project site
- Install temporary bridge crossings at Baker Brook and an Unnamed Brook
- Utilize Feller Buncher to remove trees in Brook and Nashua River Riparian Zones
- Monitor vegetation removal activities to comply with Conservation Commission Order
- Monitor restoration activities on each property as specified in plans and specifications
- Prepare As-Built plan for FAA approval
- Coordinate aerial mapping and prepare aeronautical study
