Bishop O’Connell High School
Athletic Fields Renovation
Arlington, Virginia
Bishop O’Connell High School had a latex track with five running lanes that were in disrepair, creating safety hazards that did not allow the school to run track events at their home facility. The natural grass field inside the track was overused and too narrow to provide the required widths for soccer and women’s lacrosse. The school’s existing baseball field was oriented in a southwest orientation from home plate to the pitcher’s mound, which is not a preferred orientation, and the existing outfield was much shorter then required by NFHS. Galewas retained by SHW Group to provide a design for the new facility to include the following:
- Reconstructed track and field stadium with a 6-lane running track, synthetic turf field inside the track, paved D Areas to accommodate field events, synthetic turf discus area, new bleacher, press box, and high efficiency, low glare athletic lighting.
- Reoriented baseball field with natural turf, new bleachers and press box, dugouts, bullpens, batting cages and shot put area.
- Site and landscape improvements include retaining walls, ornamental metal perimeter fencing and architectural columns, ticket booth, concession and restroom building, storage building, vehicular and pedestrian circulation renovations and landscape improvements.
